Sylvain Francisco Earned the Bag

Sylvain Francisco chose the hard path, climbing the European basketball ladder one step at a time. Now, he has finally been rewarded with what he deserved: the bag—a €4 million-a-year deal with ASVEL.

Some players take the fast track to the top. A favorable passport, standout performances with youth national teams, or the promise of untapped potential can open doors to EuroLeague powerhouses before they’ve fully proven themselves.

Others choose the hard way.

Sylvain Francisco belongs firmly in the second category. He climbed the European basketball ladder one step at a time, improving every season until reaching the continent’s elite. Today, that journey has finally paid off with exactly what he earned: a €4 million-per-year contract from ASVEL and the financial reward reserved for EuroLeague stars.

Back in the summer of 2022, during EuroBasket, Francisco had already enjoyed a solid spell in Spain with Manresa. Rather than chasing a bigger name, the then-25-year-old guard accepted an offer from Peristeri, coached by Greek basketball legend Vassilis Spanoulis, signing a contract worth around $200,000 annually.

It proved to be the breakthrough he had been searching for.

Under Spanoulis’ guidance, the French guard emerged as one of the Greek League’s biggest revelations, averaging 12.6 points and 3.5 assists per game while establishing himself as the leader of Peristeri. His performances quickly attracted the attention of EuroLeague clubs, with reports in the summer of 2023 linking him to Olympiacos and head coach Giorgos Bartzokas.

Francisco, however, stayed true to the approach that had defined his career.

Instead of making an immediate leap to a Final Four contender, he opted for a more calculated next step, signing with Bayern Munich. One season in Germany was all he needed to convince everyone that he belonged at the EuroLeague level, averaging 10.6 points and 3.2 assists in Europe’s premier competition.

His next destination was Žalgiris Kaunas, a club widely regarded as one of the best environments in Europe for player development. The Lithuanian powerhouse handed Francisco the keys to its backcourt along with a seven-figure annual salary.

He thanked them the only way he knows how—by delivering on the court.

The 2025-26 campaign was, by every measure, the finest season of his career. Francisco played with supreme confidence, fully aware of his status, and consistently dismantled opposing defenses. He averaged 16.5 points and 6.5 assists per game in the EuroLeague, leading Tomas Masiulis’ team to the playoffs of Europe’s most demanding competition outside the NBA.

His outstanding campaign earned him a place on the All-EuroLeague First Team, adding yet another milestone to an already remarkable rise.

Alongside every individual accolade and every night he lit up opposing defenses with his scoring or playmaking, you also have to consider the team success that has defined his rise—arguably an even stronger measure of his impact.

There was the remarkable season with Peristeri, where he earned a spot on the Greek League All-First Team in 2023. Then came a domestic double with Bayern Munich in 2024, winning both the German League and the German Cup, while also being named German Cup Final MVP. After that, he embarked on a dominant spell in Kaunas.

During his two seasons with Žalgiris, Francisco not only earned All-EuroLeague First Team honors in 2026, but also captured two Lithuanian League titles, two Lithuanian Cups, and the Lithuanian League Finals MVP award. What more could anyone have asked of him?

By then, everyone across European basketball knew the inevitable was coming. Francisco was about to be paid like the star he had become.

Throughout the season, reports suggested he was in line for a contract worth at least €3 million annually. In reality, the market exceeded even those expectations.

Tony Parker’s ASVEL rolled out a four-year offer worth €4 million per season, convincing the French playmaker to return home and become the centerpiece of the club’s ambitious new project in Lyon. Francisco wasn’t simply offered a lucrative contract—he was presented with the opportunity to lead the team on and off the floor.

The financial package merely sealed a decision that made perfect sense.

The 2026-27 season may bring new contenders, shifting hierarchies and another reshuffling of the EuroLeague landscape. One thing, however, is already certain.

The former Peristeri guard has finally earned the bag.

Every calculated career move, every patient decision and every steady climb brought him exactly where he wanted to be. Now, armed with one of the richest contracts in European basketball, Sylvain Francisco is ready to continue doing what he has done throughout his journey—light up opposing defenses as one of the EuroLeague’s brightest stars.
