Nikola Mirotic: What Comes Next?

Nikola Mirotic appears set to part ways with Monaco, and the basketball world is once again wondering what comes next. The question is simple: contender or pretender?

Some stories are built around a player’s mentality, his personality, and what he’s really like behind closed doors. Others lean heavily on statistics, advanced metrics and on-court production, dissecting every aspect of a player’s game through numbers.

But what about a story that begins with a number large enough to make your head spin?

How does this sound: $41 million over five years.

That’s how much Mirotic earned between 2014 and 2019 while playing for the Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Pelicans and Milwaukee Bucks. Averaging 12.3 points and 5.9 rebounds across 319 NBA appearances, the Montenegrin-born forward with a Spanish passport was the type of player any franchise could use. Need a reliable rotation piece? Make the call. Mirotic was a proven professional who could help stabilize a roster and make life easier for any front office trying to build a competitive team.

Then came the summer of 2019. At 28 years old, with the prime of his career still ahead of him, Mirotic made a decision almost nobody saw coming: he returned to Europe. Barcelona rolled out the red carpet with a multi-million-euro contract, making him the highest-paid player in the EuroLeague at the time. Yet for Mirotic, money was no longer the driving force. He wanted to come back to European basketball, and he had his own reasons for doing so.

The move carried an extra layer of intrigue. Before crossing the Atlantic, Mirotic had been one of Real Madrid’s crown jewels. He developed into a star with Los Blancos between 2008 and 2014, but his return to Spain saw him join their fiercest rivals. Instead of wearing white again, he put on Barcelona colors.

Fast forward to the summer of 2023. With the 2022 EuroLeague MVP award already on his résumé, Mirotic had the entire continent at his feet. His free agency became a saga. Or rather, one of the greatest transfer sagas European basketball has ever seen.

At times it felt like the basketball version of Breaking Bad. There were moments of tension, dramatic twists and endless speculation. There were also stretches of complete silence. Like that famous Breaking Bad episode built around chasing a fly. Or the picture Mirotic posted while calmly cleaning green beans as the entire European basketball community obsessed over where he would sign next.

Eventually, Armani Milan won the race. The partnership, however, never produced the results Ettore Messina had envisioned. Then came another high-profile move in 2025, when Mirotic joined Vassilis Spanoulis’ Monaco project. On paper, it looked like one of the most intriguing moves in Europe. Once again, reality proved harsher.

The issue wasn’t production. Now 35 years old, Mirotic averaged 11 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game while shooting nearly 40 percent from three-point range. The numbers were there.

The problem was the outcome. Monaco’s season ended with a playoff sweep at the hands of eventual EuroLeague champion Olympiacos. It was a turbulent year in the Principality, marked by financial uncertainty and instability, while Mirotic himself never seemed fully comfortable or capable of finding the level he was searching for.

All signs point to him returning to the market in the near future. This time, however, without the frenzy and drama that surrounded him in 2023.

Which brings us back to the central question. Will Mirotic choose a true contender or a pretender?

In other words, will he chase one final legitimate shot at a EuroLeague title — a meaningful Last Dance at the highest level — or continue adding numbers to an already remarkable career without the team success that has often remained just out of reach?
