Panathinaikos welcome back club legend Dimitris Diamantidis

Panathinaikos AKTOR officially announced the return of club legend Dimitris Diamantidis, marking another significant addition to the organization’s new era. The former captain, who enjoyed one of the most successful careers in the club’s history, returns to the Greens after previously serving both as a player and as a member of the club’s management.

Diamantidis spent 12 unforgettable seasons with Panathinaikos between 2004 and 2016, becoming one of the greatest players ever to wear the famous green jersey. During that remarkable period, he helped the club win 22 major trophies and established himself as one of European basketball’s most respected guards thanks to his leadership, defensive excellence and winning mentality.

Following his retirement, Diamantidis remained close to the organization, serving in an executive role between 2020 and 2022. Now, he is returning once again, although the exact nature of his new position has yet to be officially defined.

Speaking to the club’s official website shortly after completing his return, Diamantidis expressed both his happiness and excitement about rejoining the team.

“I am truly happy to return to Panathinaikos because I feel like I’ve come back home. It is very important for me that I will work again with coach Obradovic, and generally with people I know very well and respect immensely. That made my decision much easier,” he said.

His return also reunites him with legendary head coach Zeljko Obradovic, under whom Panathinaikos experienced the most successful period in its history. Their partnership produced numerous domestic and European titles, and both remain synonymous with the club’s golden era.

Diamantidis also revealed that his agreement with Panathinaikos was finalized almost immediately after meeting club owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos.

“I met with Mr. Giannakopoulos and within just a few minutes we shook hands. There was no need for many words,” he explained, highlighting the mutual trust between both sides.

Asked about the title he will hold within the organization, the former captain made it clear that his focus lies elsewhere.

“Titles have no importance at all. We’ll figure that out along the way. What truly matters is that we all work together for the team we love and achieve our goals,” Diamantidis stated.

His comments reflect the same humble approach that made him one of the most admired figures in European basketball throughout his playing career.

The return of Diamantidis is another statement of intent by Panathinaikos as the club continues to strengthen not only its roster but also its basketball operations with people who understand the team’s identity and culture. Bringing back iconic figures with championship experience is viewed as an important step in the club’s ambition to return to the top of both Greek and European basketball.

For Panathinaikos supporters, the return of one of the greatest players in club history is more than just another appointment—it is the reunion of a legend with the club he has always called home.
