Isaac Bonga is on the verge of putting on the jersey of the seven-time European champions, ready to prove why—at least on paper—he is the perfect fit for Panathinaikos under Željko Obradović.
The German forward has emerged as one of the hottest names on the European market in recent weeks. Fully aware of the strong interest from EuroLeague powerhouses, Bonga exercised the €700,000 buyout clause in his contract with Partizan, allowing him to negotiate directly with title contenders eager to add him to their roster.
Who were the clubs interested in signing the MVP of the last EuroBasket final? EuroLeague champions Olympiacos were the first to make a strong push before withdrawing from the race after Bonga informed them, at that stage of the negotiations, that he intended to wait for a possible NBA opportunity. Fenerbahçe and Hapoel Tel Aviv then entered the picture, while Real Madrid and Barcelona reportedly pulled out all the stops in an attempt to lure him to Spain. In total, five of Europe’s elite clubs had identified Bonga’s talent and were eager to add him to their rosters.
However, Panathinaikos appears set to win the race. BasketNews first reported that the Greens were closing in on the 27-year-old German international, and that is indeed the current situation. In reality, the Greek club is only a few steps away from crossing the finish line and finalizing a deal for Bonga. If the agreement is completed, it will represent both a basketball and a communication victory, while adding a player who projects as the perfect bridge between the Osman–Rogkavopoulos duo and the Hayes-Davis–Juancho Hernangómez archetype at the forward positions.
The key factor, of course, sits on the bench: Željko Obradović. The Serbian coach helped the former NBA player make the leap from Bayern Munich to Partizan, and now he is preparing to bring him onto the biggest stage in the EuroLeague.
Obradović knows better than anyone what Bonga brings to the table and how to maximize his skill set within Panathinaikos’ crowded forward rotation. The reality is that Bonga can provide qualities at both the three and the four that the team lacked throughout last season. That is precisely why he can be described as the perfect fit.
So, what makes the former Partizan forward so valuable? His defining trait is his elite defensive versatility, combined with an outstanding understanding of team defense, impressive size and high-level athleticism. Bonga is the type of forward who competes with relentless intensity, protects the rim in multiple ways and can anchor virtually any defensive scheme. As we previously described him in an earlier SWEEK article, he is “the modern forward every coach wants on his roster”.
Bonga is also a consistently strong rebounder, while offensively he doesn’t need the ball in his hands to make an impact. On a roster loaded with players who thrive with the ball as creators or scorers, having forwards who can produce without dominating possession is essential. He has an excellent feel for timing his cuts to the rim, has made significant strides as a three-point shooter and has developed reliable shooting spots beyond the arc from which he can knock down shots at an efficient rate.
His averages of 9.9 points (31% from three) and 5.6 rebounds per game in the EuroLeague placed him among the most sought-after players on the European market. More importantly, however, it was his defensive consistency, athleticism and physical profile that made him the No. 1 target for several elite coaches and clubs.
Everything now points toward the former Lakers, Wizards and Raptors forward heading to the T-Center. If the agreement is finalized in the coming hours, Panathinaikos will have secured one of the biggest signings of the summer—not only because of Bonga’s on-court value, but also because they outmaneuvered some of Europe’s biggest clubs in the race for one of the continent’s premier modern two-way forwards.
