Amid an unprecedented scoring start to the Liga Endesa season, one team has particularly caught the eye: Río Breogán. The historic Galician club has made an extraordinary start to the campaign, winning its first three games while scoring more than 100 points in each of them. The feat sees Breogán match a historic record set by Real Madrid back in the 1985–86 season.

Veteran head coach Luis Casimiro’s side completed the achievement on Saturday with a dominant 115–92 victory over Bàsquet Girona. Breogán knocked down 16 three-pointers at a 46% clip to overwhelm the Catalan outfit and make it three games in a row with at least 100 points. Francis Alonso led the way with 27 points, while Tevin Brown added 20.

The run began on September 27 with an impressive 110–104 win over Asisa Joventut at the Pazo dos Deportes in Lugo. Joventut had just been crowned Supercopa Endesa champions, but Breogán produced an outstanding team performance to take down one of the competition’s toughest opponents in a high-paced contest. Seven Breogán players reached double figures.

A week later, Breogán backed up that performance with a 95-101 road win over BAXI Manresa. The visitors had to battle back after falling as many as 11 points behind early on, but eventually took control thanks to a sensational display from Croatian point guard Dominik Mavra. He dominated the game with 22 points, 10 assists and a game-high 35 PIR.

The numbers speak for themselves: three wins from three games and 326 points scored, averaging almost 109 per contest. With that, Río Breogán has matched a unique historical achievement. Before this season, only Real Madrid in 1985–86 had opened a top-flight Spanish campaign with more than 100 points in each of its first three games. The Madrid side beat FC Barcelona 104–92 in the season opener, followed by a 90-101 win over Cacaolat Granollers, before routing fellow Galician club Clesa Ferrol 116–61 in their third outing.

However, Real Madrid fell just short of extending the streak in Round 4. The team secured another victory, beating Fórum Valladolid on the road 84-99, but its run of 100-point games came to an end. Breogán now has the chance to go one better and become the first team in Liga Endesa history to score at least 100 points in each of its first four games of a season. The Galicians will get that opportunity next Saturday when they travel to face MoraBanc Andorra.

Whether or not Breogán manages to extend its historic run, its offensive explosion is no fluke. Before the Liga Endesa season tipped off, the Galician side competed in the qualifying rounds of the FIBA Basketball Champions League. Although it ultimately failed to secure a place in the European competition, Breogán had already shown its scoring firepower, beating Bulgarian hosts Rilski Sportist 126–80 in its opening game before defeating Manchester Basketball 105–84 in the second round.

Their qualifying campaign ended in the third round, when Breo, as the club is affectionately known, fell 113–110 to Polish side Dziki Warszawa. It was a case of going down fighting, staying true to the attack-minded philosophy Casimiro has instilled during his three seasons at the helm.

So, can Río Breogán surpass Real Madrid’s 1985–86 mark and become the first team to score at least 100 points in each of its first four Liga Endesa games? We’ll find out on Saturday in Andorra.
