Dubai’s biggest problem is no secret: Final Four ambitions need better road form

Xavi Pascual

Dubai has a home court that can support lofty ambitions. But to challenge for a Final Four place, it must close the gap between its performances at Coca-Cola Arena and those away from home.

Dubai opened its EuroLeague campaign with home wins over Real Madrid, 78-77, and Barcelona, 94-87. Its first road trip brought a 76-66 defeat to Fenerbahçe. One loss in Istanbul is hardly enough to define a season. It does, however, bring a familiar question back into focus.

In its debut EuroLeague season, Dubai finished 13-6 as the designated home team and 6-13 away. Its scoring also dropped from 92.6 points per game at home to 83.7 on the road. That was a substantial gap, even allowing for the unusual circumstances that saw some home fixtures relocated to Bosnia late in the campaign.

Geography offers a reasonable explanation for part of the challenge. Flights from Dubai to several European destinations exceed six hours. Emirates, for example, lists Dubai to Madrid at seven hours and 50 minutes. Add airport time, ground transfers and a narrower recovery window, and it is reasonable to expect those journeys to affect preparation and freshness. Being early in the season does not remove that burden.

The same circumstances may strengthen Dubai’s advantage at Coca-Cola Arena. Visiting teams arrive after a lengthy journey, while the hosts prepare in familiar surroundings. Each opponent faces that particular trip for one regular-season fixture. Dubai has to manage comparable journeys repeatedly throughout its campaign.

Travel fatigue nevertheless remains a possible factor, rather than a proven explanation for every defeat. Against Fenerbahçe, Dubai drew level at 61-61 before being outscored 15-5 down the stretch. Executing under pressure and managing the decisive possessions deserve as much attention as the flight schedule.

That presents a major challenge for Xavi Pascual: balancing minutes, planning recovery and building greater consistency away from home. Dubai has already shown how dangerous it can be in its own arena. To turn Final Four ambitions into a credible challenge, it needs to bring more of that winning basketball on the road.
