Some nights, nothing goes your way.
For Jonathan Motley, his official Crvena Zvezda debut was one of those nights.
He struggled defending the pick-and-roll, was called for illegal screens, missed a point-blank finish and threw up a few bricks from the perimeter.
By the end of the night, the numbers were historically bad.
The American center played just over 14 minutes in Zvezda’s 83-77 loss to Žalgiris and finished with a PIR of -13. He had two points, two assists, five fouls – four of them offensive – six turnovers and shot 1-of-7 from the field.
The Worst PIRs in EuroLeague History
In EuroLeague history, only one player has ever posted a lower PIR.
That was former Croatian center Luka Žorić, who finished at -14 in Fenerbahçe’s 94-81 loss to Barcelona in 2013.
Žorić played 16 minutes that night, finishing with one rebound, one steal, six turnovers and four fouls while going 0-of-5 from the field.
There was one statistical consolation for Žorić: Fenerbahçe were outscored by only nine points during his minutes on the floor. Zvezda were minus-19 in Motley’s 14 minutes against Žalgiris.
Motley actually shares second place on this unwanted list with Earl Clark, the former Budućnost forward who went 0-of-10 from the field in his team’s 89-55 blowout loss to Real Madrid.
Isaiah Canaan, Brandon Davies and Serbian center Milovan Raković share the next spot at -12, alongside Brindley Wright, Chuck Eidson and Slovenian guard Slavko Duščak.
It is one of those EuroLeague records nobody wants to break.
If there is any consolation for Motley, it can only get better from here.
