Mexico made history in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Qualifiers, knocking down 28 three-pointers in a 112-86 victory over Colombia.
Mexico enjoyed a historic night in Zacatecas. Omar Quintero’s team turned the game against Colombia into… a show from beyond the 6.75m line, producing a feat never previously recorded in a World Cup Qualifier.
The Mexicans finished the game with 28 (!) made three-pointers, breaking the previous competition record. The best mark until that night had been 24, but Mexico raised the bar by four more made threes and established a new benchmark for the Qualifiers.
The record was accompanied by remarkable efficiency. Indeed, the hosts shot an impressive 58.3% from beyond the arc, making 28 of their 48 attempts. It was not simply a matter of high shooting volume, but also a night in which nearly six out of every ten long-range shots found the target.
The offensive production was shared among Moises Andriassi, Pako Cruz and Joseph Avila. Each player made seven three-pointers, emerging as the leading figures behind the record. Together, they accounted for 21 of Mexico’s 28 successful attempts, equivalent to three-quarters of the historic total.
Mexico scored 84 of its 112 points from three-point range alone. As a result, 75% of its total offensive output came from beyond the arc, a statistic that perfectly captures how the game unfolded.
Of course, for a team to reach 28 made three-pointers in 40 minutes, it needs to maintain high percentages and steady production throughout the game. Mexico managed to combine both, while also having three different players finish with seven successful shots from the perimeter.
The game in Zacatecas therefore earned its place in World Cup Qualifiers history. Mexico added an important victory to its journey toward the 2027 tournament and, at the same time, authored one of the greatest three-point shooting displays ever recorded.
