Not Every 3-0 Is Created Equal

Panathinaikos, Fenerbahce, Valencia and Partizan have all started the EuroLeague season with a perfect record. Four identical 3-0 starts, but four completely different stories. Because, in reality, not every 3-0 is created equal.

Three games are nowhere near enough to draw safe conclusions in the EuroLeague, but they are enough to give us the first indications of what each team might look like this season. And one of the most interesting early pictures can be found right at the top of the standings, where Panathinaikos, Fenerbahce, Valencia and Partizan have all opened the season with three wins in as many games. The record is the same, but the road each team has taken to get there is very different.

Panathinaikos, so far, look like a team confirming what most people expected from them. They have a deep roster, plenty of quality and several different ways to win games. More importantly, they have already shown that they can get results even when they are missing players or when they are not playing their best basketball for the full 40 minutes. Their 3-0 start feels more like a statement of strength than a surprise. Zeljko Obradovic has a lot of options in his hands, and Panathinaikos are already showing that they do not need the same player to carry them every night. In a 38-game regular season, that might end up being even more important than the perfect record itself.

Fenerbahce have also started in ideal fashion, but their 3-0 has a different meaning. Sarunas Jasikevicius’ team already look like a side with a clear identity, one that knows exactly what it wants to do and how it wants to win. They play within specific principles, they are comfortable in close games and they no longer need to impress in order to control a night.

This is not a team still trying to figure itself out. Quite the opposite. Fenerbahce look like a group that already knows the path and simply wants to follow it again. Their perfect start is not surprising, and that might actually be the most dangerous thing about them.

Then there are Valencia and Partizan, two teams that, before the season began, would not have been placed in the same category of expectations as Panathinaikos or Fenerbahce. Yet after three rounds, they are right there next to them.

Valencia might be the clearest example of why the EuroLeague should never be judged only by names on a roster. They are playing with confidence, pace and freedom, and they have already shown that they are capable of winning in different ways. They may not have the biggest budget or the most star power in the competition, but right now they have something equally important: a team that works.

Partizan are a different case again. They entered the season without being mentioned among the very biggest favourites, but their first few games have quickly pushed them into the conversation. The most important thing is not simply that they are winning, but that they are beginning to create the feeling that they could become one of those teams nobody wants to face. There is energy, confidence and a sense that this group may have more to show than many expected before the season started.

That is also where some of the beauty of the EuroLeague lies. The standings may currently show four teams sitting at 3-0, but behind those identical numbers are four completely different realities. For Panathinaikos, it is an early confirmation of huge expectations. For Fenerbahce, it is continuity and stability. For Valencia, it is another reminder that you do not always need the biggest names to build a very good team. And for Partizan, it may be the beginning of a journey from early surprise to something much more serious.

A few weeks from now, everything could look completely different. One of these teams may drop back, while another may prove that it is here to stay near the top for the long run. That discussion can wait. For now, the first small story of this EuroLeague season is simple: four teams have reached exactly the same point, but none of them got there in exactly the same way.

Because, after all, not every 3-0 is created equal.
