739 Blocks and Counting: Walter Tavares Is Still Making History

Walter Tavares has become the all-time leading shot-blocker in Spanish ACB history, reaching 739 blocks and surpassing Fran Vazquez. At 34 years old, the Real Madrid center remains one of the most influential big men in European basketball, with his performances in this season’s EuroLeague showing that his impact is far from fading.

Some players stand out because of their scoring, others because of their playmaking, while a few make their reputation by delivering in the biggest moments. Walter Tavares, however, has built his career in a different way. The Real Madrid center has spent years controlling the paint and making life extremely difficult for anyone attempting to attack the basket. His defensive presence has become one of the most recognisable features of European basketball, and on Sunday, November 1, he added another remarkable achievement to his already impressive career.

During Real Madrid’s 90-79 victory over Burgos in the Spanish league, Tavares recorded two blocks to reach 739 for his ACB career, surpassing the previous record of 738 held by Fran Vazquez. The historic moment arrived early in the third quarter, when the Cape Verdean center rejected an attempt by Balsa Koprivica. The game was briefly stopped as Madrid honoured their player in front of the home crowd and his family, providing a special moment for someone who has spent the majority of his career representing the Spanish giants.

What makes the achievement particularly impressive is that Tavares needed just 408 ACB appearances to reach the top of the all-time list. His journey in Spanish basketball began with Gran Canaria back in 2013, and since then he has developed into one of the most dominant defensive big men in European basketball. Of his 739 blocks, 617 have come in a Real Madrid jersey. His success is not simply a result of his extraordinary size, but also of his understanding of defensive positioning, timing and ability to read the decisions of opposing players before they attempt to score.

His dominance, however, extends well beyond Spanish basketball. Just a few days earlier, on October 27, Tavares also became the EuroLeague’s all-time leader in offensive rebounds, reaching 825 against Baskonia and moving past Kyle Hines. The numbers become even more impressive when considering that Tavares reached that milestone in 323 games, compared to the 425 appearances Hines needed. The Real Madrid center already holds the EuroLeague’s all-time records for total rebounds and blocked shots, making his position among the competition’s most influential big men even stronger.

And for anyone wondering whether the 34-year-old is beginning to slow down, his numbers this season suggest otherwise. Through the first nine EuroLeague rounds, Tavares is averaging 10.2 points and 7.4 rebounds while shooting an outstanding 78% from two-point range. These figures underline how efficiently he continues to operate around the basket, making the most of the opportunities created by his teammates without requiring a large number of offensive possessions.

Of course, his real value cannot be fully explained through the box score. Simply having Tavares protecting the paint changes the way opposing teams approach their offense, often forcing guards and forwards to reconsider their decisions when they encounter his presence near the rim. His rebounding also provides Real Madrid with additional possessions, while his ability to finish around the basket gives the team’s playmakers a reliable option in pick-and-roll situations and inside the paint.

Tavares does not need to score 20 points every night to influence a game, nor does he need to dominate the ball to make his presence felt. Real Madrid know exactly what they can expect from him, and he has managed to maintain a high level of efficiency while adjusting to the demands of different seasons and teammates. In an era when basketball discussions increasingly revolve around guards, three-point shooting and offensive pace, the Cape Verdean center continues to demonstrate just how valuable a dominant traditional big man can be.

The 739 blocks in the ACB represent a historic achievement, just as his EuroLeague rebounding records have secured his place in the competition’s record books. More importantly, though, Tavares is not simply a veteran living off his past accomplishments. He remains a significant contributor for one of Europe’s biggest clubs, continues to influence games at the highest level and is still adding new chapters to an already remarkable career.
