A changing of the guard is underway when it comes to who takes responsibility for Barcelona down the stretch. For several seasons, Kevin Punter was the undisputed go-to option whenever a game reached crunch time. But the impact of undersized American point guard Justin Robinson since joining the Blaugrana has been remarkable in that regard.
The Virginia native was instrumental on Friday night in Barcelona’s sixth EuroLeague victory of the season, a 98-94 win over Valencia Basket. Robinson poured in 22 points, ultimately tipping the balance in the hosts’ favour after an entertaining scoring duel with Armoni Brooks, who finished with 26 points and led the visitors in the absence of Nikola Mirotic and with TJ Shorts having an unusually quiet night, falling short of his usual production.

Once again, Robinson stepped up for Aleksander Sekulic’s side when it mattered most, knocking down several big shots to seal Barcelona’s victory. His three-pointer with one minute remaining put the hosts firmly in control at 93-88, coming after a crucial and-one (90-86) and another three-pointer (87-83) with 2:34 left on the clock.
In just his second EuroLeague season, the 185 centimeters floor general is establishing himself as an exceptionally reliable performer in high-pressure situations. And there is no need to look too far back to find further evidence. On October 13, in Round 5 of the competition, Robinson hit a game-winning three-pointer against Maccabi Tel Aviv (90-87). It came on a night when the American had struggled to find his rhythm, but his shot with one second remaining prevented overtime and kept the win at the Palau Blaugrana.

Just three days later, Barcelona were back at home, this time hosting reigning European champions Olympiacos. Robinson, who finished with 17 points and six assists, delivered another late-game dagger, although with the opposite outcome. His three-pointer at the buzzer prevented the Greek side from sealing the win in regulation, forcing overtime after tying the game at 92-92. Olympiacos eventually prevailed 100-105.

Taken together, Barcelona’s recent performances have established Justin Robinson as one of Europe’s most dependable players in the biggest moments. The Virginia Tech product, whose road to the top level of European basketball was anything but straightforward, has even begun to challenge Kevin Punter’s status as the team’s primary go-to option when games are on the line.
At 29, and having played 68 NBA games across five franchises —the Washington Wizards, Oklahoma City Thunder, Milwaukee Bucks, Sacramento Kings and Detroit Pistons— the Manassas native is arguably playing the best basketball of his career. It was hardly an outcome anyone could have confidently predicted when he signed with the Illawarra Hawks in Australia in 2022, or when Río Breogán became his first European club late in the 2023-24 season, following a serious meniscus injury during his time in Australia.

From Lugo, Robinson moved to Trapani Shark, the ambitious underdog that briefly mixed it with Italy’s elite before ultimately being brought down by financial difficulties. There, he earned a place on the Italian League’s All-First Team. That paved the way for his EuroLeague breakthrough with Paris Basketball, where he faced a major challenge: replacing TJ Shorts, who joined Panathinaikos in the summer of 2025.
However, Robinson’s first season in the French capital left little doubt that he belonged at this level. He averaged 14.6 points and 4.5 assists per game, producing several outstanding performances, including a remarkable 35-point, 39-performance-index-rating display at Piraeus against Olympiacos.
Now, playing for a European powerhouse like Barcelona and facing the biggest challenge of his career, Justin Robinson is proving to be one of the EuroLeague’s most reliable players when games are truly on the line. And that is worth an awful lot.
