Keaton Wallace is preparing for his first season in the EuroLeague and wants to prove right from the start that he can become one of the best defenders in the competition.
Maccabi Tel Aviv decided to invest in Keaton Wallace this summer, adding a player with a different set of characteristics to their backcourt. The 27-year-old American signed a two-year deal and is leaving the United States — and the G League/NBA environment — for his first season in the EuroLeague, with the intensity he brings on both ends of the floor standing out as one of his main “weapons”.
The 1.91m combo guard spent the previous two seasons between the Atlanta Hawks and their G League affiliate, making a total of 84 NBA appearances. He averaged 4.2 points, 1.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists, while in the 2025-2026 season he played 53 games in the “magical world” of the NBA, posting 3.5 points, 1.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.
Those numbers may not exactly… jump off the page, but there is one performance that shows Wallace can impact a game in many different ways. In fact, there is one game against the Orlando Magic that he will probably remember… forever. Wallace produced the best night of his career, recording a triple-double with 15 points, 15 assists and 11 rebounds, while also adding five steals.
Of course, Maccabi did not sign him expecting to get a player who will score 20 points every night.
“Keaton is a player who brings toughness and intensity on both ends of the floor. We are confident he will quickly connect with the team and the fans, and help us achieve our goals this season,” Oded Kattash said after his signing. And those two words — “toughness” and “intensity” — pretty much sum up… his entire playing profile.
You see, the part of Wallace’s game that stands out the most is his defense. The American is a “pitbull” on the perimeter, a player who can… bite into the opposing ball-handler and ramp up the pressure on the ball from the opening seconds of a possession.
Point-of-attack defense is one of his biggest strengths. The 27-year-old has the speed, energy and willingness to pressure opposing guards all over the court, disrupting the offense before it can even get into its primary action.
At the same time, he has quick hands and puts plenty of… thought into the defensive side of the game. He “reads” passing lanes, looks for deflections and can force opponents into turnovers, which can then be turned into transition opportunities. For a team looking to push the pace, having a perimeter player capable of creating open-court situations through his defense carries significant value.
Equally important is his ability to navigate screens. The scouting reports on Wallace highlight both his speed and — perhaps even more importantly — his persistence in staying involved in the play and continuing to… bother the ball-handler after fighting his way through a screen.
His overall defensive versatility completes the package. Wallace is capable of guarding both backcourt positions and dealing with different types of opposing guards, giving Kattash more options when it comes to matchups and switching.
Of course, the transition from the NBA to the EuroLeague is never an… automatic process. Wallace will have to adjust to different spacing, a different style of basketball and a competition where every weakness is quickly placed under the… microscope.
Still, the raw materials are there: toughness, quick feet, ball pressure, deflections and defensive versatility. Maccabi have added a… pitbull to their backcourt, and Keaton Wallace arrives in Europe with the tools to develop into one of the most “annoying” defenders in the EuroLeague.
