The great truth behind the Walkup – Olympiacos saga

STOIXIMAN SUPER CUP 2025 / ΤΕΛΙΚΟΣ / ΠΡΟΜΗΘΕΑΣ - ΟΣΦΠ (KLODIAN LATO / EUROKINISSI)

The Thomas Walkup – Olympiacos saga has now reached another level, with the two sides at an impasse and the player unilaterally seeking to terminate his contract.

But beyond the question of “who is right?”, there is a bigger truth that is difficult to ignore in today’s game.

Olympiacos has every right to feel that Walkup failed to honor his contractual commitment. The 33-year-old guard is under contract until 2027, there is no buyout clause in his deal, and the Reds rejected Dubai’s offers for his services. At the same time, however, if the player remains without the current situation changing, Olympiacos will have a key player on its roster who has made it clear that he wants to be somewhere else.

Walkup has been with Olympiacos since 2021 and has become an important part of the team, not only because of what he contributes statistically, but also through his defense, playmaking and overall influence. That is precisely what makes this situation so difficult: a contract can bind a player, but it cannot recreate the same desire to play for a team once that player has decided he wants to leave.

This is where players’ empowerment comes into play. Players now have greater control over their careers and the ability to pursue better opportunities, without that necessarily meaning they are always right or that they can simply ignore their contractual obligations. In Walkup’s case, there is also a significant financial incentive, with Dubai’s offer reportedly worth close to €3 million per year.

Olympiacos, therefore, is fully entitled to defend its contractual position, but it also has to weigh up the sporting reality. It is not always better to keep a player simply because you can. If Walkup genuinely no longer wants to be at Olympiacos, keeping him could ultimately become a bigger problem than letting him leave.

Because, at the end of the day, basketball is not played only through contracts. It is played on the court, and it requires players who genuinely want to be there.
