What Comes Next for Partizan and Jabari Parker?

Jabari Parker landed in Belgrade on Thursday morning and reopened a question that, for much of the summer, seemed to have already been answered. The American reported for the start of Partizan’s preparations for the new season, even though for months the expectation had been that the club would try to work out a mutual separation.

His arrival does not necessarily mean Partizan has changed its position, nor does it mean Parker is back in Joan Peñarroya’s plans. It does, however, make one thing clear, that the story is not over yet. And after everything that has happened since he arrived in Belgrade last summer, there has never been much doubt about what Parker can do with the ball in his hands. The bigger question is whether he is physically and mentally ready to show those qualities again and look like the player Partizan thought it was signing.

The Player Partizan Expected Never Really Arrived

Parker arrived last summer as one of Partizan’s marquee additions, carrying the NBA pedigree of a former No. 2 draft pick and two strong seasons with Barcelona. He was expected to be one of the players Željko Obradović would build his offense around. Outside of a handful of games in which he showed why he was once considered one of the best talents of his generation, that version of Parker was rarely seen. The last time he truly looked like himself was against Studentski Centar, back in November.

What followed became a much bigger issue than his generally modest production. After Joan Peñarroya took over, Parker was first removed from the team because of excess weight and poor conditioning. By the end of February, he had been sent on loan to Joventut, a move that at the time looked very much like the beginning of the end of his time with Partizan.

Badalona Changed the Conversation

In Badalona, however, the picture changed. Parker lost significant weight, worked his way back into proper game shape and became one of Joventut’s best players. The historic Catalan club, though, was not willing to keep him because of his high salary.

He also returned to Belgrade in visibly better physical condition. That does not erase what happened before, but it changes the terms of the conversation around him. The biggest obstacle now is probably the lack of trust on both sides.

Is there still a place for Jabari Parker on this roster? Can he maintain his conditioning and form over a full stretch of the season? Can he be useful in Peñarroya’s system, as he was when the two worked together in Barcelona? After everything that has happened, is there enough trust left on both sides to give the relationship another chance? Those are the questions Partizan now has to answer.

Partizan Had Already Made Its Position Clear

Club president Ostoja Mijailović spoke quite clearly in June about Partizan’s intention to bring the situation to a close.

“Our position on this matter is completely clear. We want to find a solution that is in the best interest of the club and bring this situation to an end. Last season, that contract represented a significant financial burden for Partizan, with a cost of more than three million dollars gross, including taxes and agent commission. Certain decisions from the past proved less successful than we had expected, but the responsibility of management is not to look backward. It is to find solutions to the challenges it inherited or created. We are focused on resolving this situation in the best possible way and continuing to build a competitive and financially stable Partizan”, Mijailović said for Mozzart Sport.

At the time, Parker’s contract was clearly being treated as a burden, while a separation appeared to be the preferred outcome. Two months later, the circumstances are not quite the same.

If He Is Still Under Contract, Basketball Has to Enter the Calculation

If Partizan has not found a way to terminate the contract on terms that make financial sense, then it is reasonable to consider the other option: using Parker for what he can still provide on the court. Especially now, when he is returning in far better condition than he was when Peñarroya removed him from the team, and at a moment when Partizan badly needs to put together a competitive roster.

Basketball ability was never the issue, what Partizan did not get from Parker last season was consistency, physical readiness and a stable enough role for that talent to translate into real value.

For the partnership to continue, it would take more than Parker passing his medical tests and showing up for practice. Peñarroya would have to be willing to bring him back into his basketball plans, while Parker would have to accept a very different position from the one he had when he arrived in Belgrade last summer. After everything that has happened, neither his reputation nor the size of his contract guarantees him anything.

The Contract Still Shapes Every Option

There is also the financial side. If Partizan can reach an acceptable termination agreement or find a club willing to take on a significant portion of Parker’s contract, a separation remains a very realistic outcome. But if ending the relationship means paying a large amount of money to a player who will then play somewhere else, the calculation understandably changes.

The first few practices should offer a clearer indication of whether there is any room to rebuild a relationship that had effectively been broken.

Now both sides have to decide whether enough has changed for them to change their decision as well.
