Yabusele in Obradović’s hands? A nightmare scenario for every EuroLeague rival

A €12 million blockbuster deal by Dimitris Giannakopoulos is set to hand Guerschon Yabusele to Željko Obradović, giving Panathinaikos a roster that looks straight out of a nightmare for the rest of the EuroLeague.

Panathinaikos is on the verge of adding one of Europe’s most complete and impactful frontcourt players to Obradović’s arsenal—a player capable of changing the balance of power on both ends of the floor. Guerschon Yabusele combines strength, athleticism, experience and skill at a level rarely seen in the EuroLeague. Above all, he gives Obradović the flexibility to deploy different lineups, dictate different tempos and find answers against virtually any opponent.

The first thing that stands out is, of course, his physical profile. Standing 2.03 meters tall and weighing around 120 kilograms, Yabusele is set to become one of the most physically imposing players in the competition. Yet he is far from being a traditional bruising big who relies solely on strength. Instead, he combines his size with explosiveness, quick first-step acceleration and outstanding balance. That makes him a constant mismatch, whether he is facing a power forward or a center. Put a smaller defender on him and he will punish him in the post. Switch a slower big onto him and he has the ball-handling ability to attack off the dribble and get all the way to the rim.

Equally important is his positional versatility. Yabusele can perform at a high level both as a power forward and as a center. In European basketball, it would hardly be surprising if he eventually became a full-time interior presence. That versatility dramatically expands Obradović’s tactical options.

Panathinaikos will be able to play faster lineups, switch more aggressively on defense and maintain elite physicality without sacrificing offensive quality. At the same time, the French international is an outstanding screener in pick-and-roll situations, consistently creating advantages for ball handlers whether he rolls hard to the basket or pops out to the perimeter. For a playmaker like Kostas Sloukas, it is difficult to ask for a better frontcourt partner.

Another major weapon is his ability to stretch the floor with his shooting. Yabusele forces defenses to respect him beyond the three-point line. During his EuroLeague career, he shot 41.1% from deep, while in his most recent NBA stint with the Chicago Bulls he knocked down 38.3% of his three-point attempts. Those numbers prevent opposing defenses from packing the paint. Every help rotation can be punished, every closeout can be attacked off the dribble, and every possession creates more space offensively. As a result, Kendrick Nunn should find significantly more driving lanes and cleaner opportunities to attack the basket.

Of course, Yabusele’s offensive package extends far beyond his perimeter shooting. The 30-year-old is an elite finisher around the rim, thrives through contact and runs the floor remarkably well for a player of his size. In transition, he is a constant threat, capable of turning a defensive rebound into an easy basket within seconds.

Just as importantly, he doesn’t need high usage to impact winning. Cuts, offensive rebounds, hustle plays and relentless activity around the basket allow him to influence games without dominating the ball—qualities that elevate the intensity and overall level of any team he joins.

His defensive impact could prove just as valuable, especially for a Panathinaikos side that struggled defensively in recent years and has already addressed that weakness—at least on paper—with the additions of Brancou Badio, Isaac Bonga and Mustafa Fall.

Yabusele has the mobility to switch onto guards, wings and stronger centers for extended stretches. Individual defense is one of his greatest strengths, while his physicality enables him to compete against the EuroLeague’s toughest frontcourt players. The NBA-level toughness he brings perfectly matches the identity Obradović wants his team to establish.

His résumé also explains why this move is viewed as one of the biggest signings of the European summer. With more than 200 NBA appearances, experience with franchises such as the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers, a EuroLeague title with Real Madrid and multiple medals with the French national team, Yabusele has proven he can perform under pressure. He is a player built for high-stakes basketball, bringing not only talent but also leadership and winning experience.

In that sense, Panathinaikos is doing much more than completing another marquee signing. By committing €12 million over three years, Dimitris Giannakopoulos is making it clear that he is once again willing to break the bank in order to restore the Greens to the summit of European basketball.

Yabusele is arriving at T-Center to reshape the EuroLeague landscape and place yet another elite weapon in Željko Obradović’s hands. For every Panathinaikos rival, that may well be the most alarming development of the summer.
