Isaac Bonga: The Transfer Race Is On

Isaac Bonga is rapidly becoming one of the hottest names on the European market this summer, with his name already linked to Panathinaikos, Olympiacos, Real Madrid and several other major clubs.

The 27-year-old German forward, equally comfortable playing at both the “3” and the “4”, has emerged as one of the most sought-after players in Europe over the past few weeks. After winning gold medals with Germany at the 2023 FIBA World Cup and EuroBasket 2025, Bonga now looks set to become one of the key figures of this offseason’s transfer market.

But let’s start from the beginning.

Bonga possesses elite defensive versatility and can guard opposing guards and forwards with equal effectiveness. He switches comfortably on screens, never loses focus on the defensive end—in fact, consistency is one of his greatest strengths—and stands out for both his intensity and his commitment to protecting his team’s basket. Standing at 2.03m with a long wingspan and outstanding athleticism, the German international is the definition of a modern forward and exactly the type of player every coach would love to have on his roster.

And when we say every coach, we truly mean every coach—even the greatest of them all. It was Zeljko Obradovic who identified Bonga’s potential during his time at Bayern Munich and brought him to Belgrade to join Partizan in the summer of 2024.

Among his many qualities, the former NBA player is an excellent rebounder, thrives without the ball in his hands, understands timing on cuts behind the defense and consistently finds ways to impact the game. Over the last few years, he has also improved significantly as a three-point shooter, developing several spots on the floor from which he can be particularly dangerous.

Anyone who judges basketball solely through box-score averages may not be overly impressed by the 9.9 points (60.2% on two-pointers, 31% from three), 5.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 0.9 steals he averaged in the 2025-26 EuroLeague season. However, clubs operating at the highest level evaluate skill sets before statistics—and rightfully so. Bonga’s profile places him among the most complete and modern forwards currently playing in Europe.

The profile becomes even more intriguing when considering the path Bonga has taken throughout his career. He has spent time with top NBA organizations, including the Los Angeles Lakers, Washington Wizards and Toronto Raptors, while also competing for titles with clubs such as Bayern Munich and Partizan Belgrade in highly competitive leagues. At the same time, he has been a key member of what is widely regarded as the most successful generation in the history of German basketball.

Add to that a full four-year EuroLeague run—two seasons with Bayern and two with Partizan—during which he made 129 appearances, averaging 7.6 points per game (34.3% from three-point range) and 4.6 rebounds.

In any case, there is no need to look too far. Bonga was named MVP of the EuroBasket final last September against Ergin Ataman’s Turkey, producing 20 points (4/7 on two-pointers, 4/4 from beyond the arc), 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and 1 block in just 24 minutes and 22 seconds.

What Is Happening With His Future?

Bonga’s top priority reportedly remains a return to the NBA. Back in April, BasketNews reported that the German forward had made it clear he would like to pursue another opportunity in the United States. A few days ago, UpTempo added that there has been strong interest from the Detroit Pistons.

Although Bonga is still under contract with Partizan, reports indicate that his deal includes a EuroLeague-out clause worth $700,000. For that reason, Serbian outlet Mozzart Sport recently suggested that all signs point toward his departure from Belgrade, regardless of whether his next destination is another EuroLeague club or a return to the NBA.

Over the past few weeks, multiple reports across Europe linked him with Olympiacos. Bonga would appear to be a natural fit for the reigning EuroLeague champions, capable of covering both forward positions while bringing a different skill set to Georgios Bartzokas’ roster.

Magic EuroLeague also revealed that Real Madrid have placed the German international high on their wishlist. The Spanish giants are entering a major rebuilding phase and Bonga has reportedly been identified as one of the players who could help shape Sergio Scariolo’s new project.

Over the last few hours, however, Panathinaikos has emerged as another serious contender. According to BackDoorPodcast, the Greens are prepared to do whatever it takes to bring Bonga to Athens and the Telekom Center. The Italian outlet also highlighted his relationship with Obradovic and explained why he could become one of Panathinaikos’ top priorities this summer.

Belgrade? Athens? Madrid? Piraeus? Another surprise destination somewhere in Europe? Or perhaps… the United States?

Isaac Bonga has the EuroLeague at his feet, and his decision could trigger a domino effect across the forward market this summer.
