Nikos Rogkavopoulos emerged as Panathinaikos’ biggest gain during the 2025-26 season, and the explanation behind that statement is particularly simple. All one needs to do is look at both his performances whenever he was given playing time and his public comments, which reflected his mentality. That is why those within the Greens believe the Greek shooter can take off under Zeljko Obradovic.
The numbers from Rogkavopoulos’ first season at Panathinaikos cannot fully describe his contribution or his potential. His averages of 5.6 points, 2 rebounds and 12:19 minutes in the EuroLeague look like a simple statistical record, one that feels rather empty without the necessary context. Behind those averages were games in which the Greek forward displayed his offensive talent, shooting ability and, above all, the potential mentioned earlier. At the same time, “Roga” showed that he understands what it means to be part of Panathinaikos. Let’s put everything in order…
Rogkavopoulos arguably possesses the best and most reliable shot among the Greek players of his generation. He can execute in catch-and-shoot situations, punish the defense from the corners, shoot on the move and use his size against smaller opponents. However, his offensive arsenal is not limited to three-point shooting. He can put the ball on the floor, attack closeouts and finish near the basket, as illustrated by his impressive 63.2% shooting on two-pointers last season.
His 32.1% from beyond the arc last season was significantly lower than the percentages he recorded during his two years with Baskonia: 52.1% in 2023-24 and 43.5% in 2024-25. That decline does not mean the quality of his shot suddenly disappeared. It was more closely connected to the way he was used. Rogkavopoulos was unable to establish consistent playing time, a clearly defined role or the necessary continuity from one game to the next. There were nights when a single missed shot was enough to send him straight back to the bench, without giving him the opportunity to find his rhythm.
Ergin Ataman’s management did not do him justice, and that was an issue repeatedly discussed and analyzed throughout the previous season. His touches were limited, very few plays were designed for him and his minutes were often fragmented. It is difficult for any shooter to build confidence when he knows that every attempt may directly affect whether he stays on the court. Despite that, “Roga” never caused any problems. He waited, kept working and remained ready to contribute, even when he was given only 12 or 14 minutes. Whenever the opportunity arrived, as it did in the Greek Cup final, he stepped up and made a difference.
Of course, Panathinaikos are not evaluating him solely on what he did within the four lines of the court—or the glass floor. He is a Greek player who fully understands where he is and what it means to carry the weight of the green jersey. His public comments were always serious and measured, without easy excuses or any attempt to shift responsibility elsewhere. He consistently set the bar high for the team and spoke with the mentality of an athlete determined to compete for titles.
He demonstrated the same understanding through his actions, playing through injury and even taking injections in order to be available. These are the moments—or nights—that explain better than any analysis or public statement why Rogkavopoulos earned the appreciation of both the organization and its supporters.
The arrival of Zeljko Obradovic can also change the situation for him. The Serbian coach places enormous emphasis on detail, clearly defined roles and maximizing each player’s strongest attributes. The Greek international small forward can now come off specific actions, use screens and receive the ball in the areas where he is truly dangerous. With creators such as Kostas Sloukas alongside him, he should have more opportunities to take high-quality, open shots.
Cedi Osman’s departure, in a way, creates additional space and opportunities on offense, while Isaac Bonga’s presence provides the defensive balance required both on the perimeter and across the forward positions. Within this new setup, “Roga” will have the chance to develop into a key part of the new Panathinaikos. He is the next big thing in Greek basketball, and the upcoming season may become the year of his true basketball take-off.
