Andre Ingram is one of the most unique stories in the NBA. After ten years in the G League, never giving up on his dream, he signed a contract with the Los Angeles Lakers at the age of 32 for the final two games of the 2017-18 season.
On April 10, 2018, against the Houston Rockets, the American guard made the debut of a lifetime. He stepped onto the court to a standing ovation and finished the game with 19 points, shooting 6/8 from the field and making four three-pointers. In fact, Lakers fans chanted “MVP,” recognizing his journey and perseverance.
His performance was the best by a Lakers player in their career debut since Nick Van Exel’s 23 points in 1993. At the same time, he managed to earn the respect of even his opponents, with Chris Paul and James Harden congratulating him.
His story held even greater significance, as in all the preceding years, Ingram supplemented his income by tutoring math. That night, however, he wasn’t just a G League veteran. He was an NBA player who proved that some dreams may be delayed, but they don’t have an expiration date.
Afterward, of course, he did not manage to establish himself in the NBA. He played a total of just six games with the Lakers, but that unforgettable debut performance remains one of the most beautiful stories in American basketball.
