Obradović, Diamantidis, Batiste: Panathinaikos Have Built Their Strongest Foundations in Just a Few Weeks

Panathinaikos have been one of the busiest teams on the market this summer. Within just a few weeks, the Greens have not only strengthened their roster but have also laid the strongest foundations throughout the entire organization.

The Greek Cup winners have already secured the signings of Moustapha Fall, Brancou Badio and Isaac Bonga. Each move has been analyzed extensively by SKWEEK, focusing on the qualities they will bring to the glass floor and the characteristics Panathinaikos lacked during the previous campaign.

However, the most significant developments surrounding the seven-time EuroLeague champions this summer have taken place away from the court. Three decisions, rich in symbolism and substance, have reshaped the entire organization.

The biggest bombshell of the offseason—or perhaps of the last several summers—came in late June with the return of Željko Obradović. Widely regarded as the greatest coach in European basketball history, Obradović agreed to a three-year deal with Dimitris Giannakopoulos and returned to what many consider his basketball home. As the club’s announcement fittingly suggested, it was “as if he had never left.”

Obradović wasted no time getting to work. During his official presentation, several recurring themes clearly outlined the direction of the new project. Three words stood above the rest: fire, motivation and respect.

The second major addition came with Mike Batiste’s return. The three-time EuroLeague champion with Panathinaikos left the NBA after a decade to join Obradović’s coaching staff, where he is expected to contribute on multiple levels.

As a former American player who enjoyed tremendous success in Europe, Batiste can naturally serve as the bridge between the head coach and the players. At the same time, he is expected to play a key role in developing the team’s frontcourt. Throughout his coaching career, the 46-year-old worked alongside numerous elite players during his time with the Brooklyn Nets, Charlotte Hornets, Orlando Magic, Washington Wizards, Houston Rockets and Toronto Raptors.

While the coaching staff was taking shape, Dimitris Giannakopoulos completed another move filled with both nostalgia and long-term significance: bringing Dimitris Diamantidis back to the club in an executive role.

It was no coincidence that both Giannakopoulos’ social media post and the club’s official announcement welcomed “3D” back home. Diamantidis became one of the most beloved and decorated figures in Panathinaikos history, and he now returns to work once again alongside the man who helped shape his legendary career, Željko Obradović.

“I am truly happy to return to Panathinaikos because it feels like coming home,” said the EuroLeague Legend. “It means a lot to work again with Coach Obradović and, in general, with people I know very well and respect immensely. That made my decision much easier.”

He also revealed how quickly everything came together.

“I met with Mr. Giannakopoulos and within just a few minutes we shook hands. It didn’t take many words.”

Yet perhaps his most meaningful statement came afterward.

“Titles don’t matter. We’ll figure out the role along the way. What matters is that we all work for the team we love and achieve our goals.”

No club can sign a guarantee of success or championships. That is why Diamantidis’ closing message is the one that deserves the greatest attention: “What matters is that we all work for the team we love and achieve our goals.”

In the space of a single summer, Panathinaikos have reinforced every level of the organization with people who genuinely identify with the club and everything the shamrock represents. Expectations will naturally be sky-high, and success may simply become a matter of time. More importantly, though, the entire organization now projects stability, unity and purpose—qualities that give every Panathinaikos supporter reason to feel proud when looking at the faces on the bench and behind it.
