A BRAND NEW STORY: PAOK reintroduces itself with the Trinchieri touch!

There are moments in sports when you can feel a change in the weather long before the first drop of rain falls. Inside Pylaia’s basketball “Palataki”, the atmosphere hasn’t just smelled of anticipation lately—it smells of rebirth. At every single level! After years plagued by hardships, where everyday life was a constant battle for survival, PAOK is taking a deep breath, looking in the mirror, and deciding to return where it rightfully belongs: to the elite of Greece and Europe.

This is not just another report on transfers and budgets. It is the story of a romantic yet perfectly structured masterplan, aiming to give “wings” to tradition once again and transform the memories of a glorious past into a living, modern reality.

The owner’s vision

Every great journey needs someone who is not afraid to look up. For PAOK, that man is Telis Mystakidis. From day one of taking over the club’s fortunes, he made it clear that he did not come to manage the situation, but to fundamentally change it.

The bold €12 million share capital increase, the largest the club has ever seen, was not just a figure on a balance sheet. It was a profound statement of love and faith. It was the fuel needed to get the engine running at a championship pace again, granting the team the luxury to look world-class players like Nick Calathes in the eye and build core rosters with a long-term horizon.

Andrea Trinchieri: A “Manager” with philosophy and passion

If financial stability is the foundation, Andrea Trinchieri is the architect shaping the dream. His arrival in Thessaloniki on a three-year contract was not just a blockbuster airport signing, it was a true statement of intent for European basketball.

The Italian tactician did not come to Greece just to be the man on the sidelines. He operates as an authentic, English-style manager, possessing a voice, an opinion, and above all, soul in every facet of the organization. “Basketball is like playing chess while boxing. Someone is trying to hit you, and you are trying to make the right move. Maintaining focus during a physical war,” was one of his most intriguing quotes as he completed his first 100 days as a member of PAOK.

The most beautiful element Trinchieri brought with him is his spiritual connection to the club, which he encapsulated in two Greek words: “ponos” (pain) and “pathos” (passion). The experienced coach instantly understood that PAOK carries a unique emotional weight, deeply rooted in its refugee origins, but also in the profound wounds left by the losses of its fans over the years, most recently, the dark page of the tragedy in Romania.

Trinchieri wants to channel this pain into passion on the hardwood, a passion that defines him as well as the timeless, electric energy of the black-and-white stands. His goal is not to leave the team trapped in nostalgia, but to honor this immense history by creating fresh, vivid images that will allow the fans to stop living solely on memories.

After all, his personal three-year bet boils down to one thing: being able to look back and say that his meeting and agreement with Mr. Mystakidis in Milan “was the best decision of my life.”

Building tomorrow from scratch

One of the first things the Italian coach pointed out was the necessity for their own “sacred” daily space. His wish is already turning into concrete and steel. In the Pylaia area, a true greenfield project is well underway. An 8,000-square-meter sports center being built from scratch, without limitations, to house the team’s dreams.

Two indoor courts, state-of-the-art training facilities, video rooms, and recovery areas will be ready by autumn to welcome the players. However, this “home” is not being built just for the present. For Trinchieri, local players are the ones who set the tone in the locker room. But since the “pool” of Greek players is small, the solution lies in production. The upcoming partnership with DEKA, a premier model academy, serves as the vehicle to nurture talents aged 12-18 within an authentic European basketball school.

Methodically towards the EuroLeague stars

In the new PAOK, the words “fast” and “right” have finally found a common balance. The management and the coach know very well that palaces are not built overnight. The grand love affair with the EuroLeague is a given, but it can wait while the team lays its foundations, aiming to reach its ultimate goal by conquering the top of the EuroCup.

This season’s roster was designed precisely for this purpose, a squad full of personality, hungry for distinction, now waiting only for its final touch at the “3” position to be complete. Even the arena situation is being evaluated with the seriousness befitting a club of European standards. If the future demands a venue with a capacity exceeding 10,000 seats for the EuroLeague, PAOK is ready to take the leap and relocate, if it means growing even larger.

A city awakening from its slumber

The city is beginning to wake up. From 8-year-old kids to 90-year-old grandfathers, everyone in Thessaloniki has their own story to tell about PAOK. The team’s resurgence, combined with the parallel efforts of Aris, is reviving a healthy rivalry that sends a clear message to Athens: the balance of power is shifting.

Andrea Trinchieri, however, is no fan of sending theoretical messages to the crowd. He prefers to make a “deal” with them, to create a sporting “hell” in the arena and push the players to run through walls.

PAOK has embarked on a journey of no return. The journey of a club that decided not to just get by with what it found, but to build a lasting legacy from scratch. And the most beautiful part of it all is that this journey is no longer fueled by the anxiety of survival, but by the sweet anticipation of the great moments yet to come.
