The Sophomore Class That Could Change the NBA

The 2025 NBA Draft class needed only one season to make its presence felt. Cooper Flagg became Rookie of the Year, Kon Knueppel produced one of the greatest shooting seasons ever by a first-year player and VJ Edgecombe established himself as a genuine two-way building block. Together, the three averaged 55.5 points per game, but their sophomore seasons will be defined by more than scoring.

Flagg remains the player with the highest ceiling. He averaged 21 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists, leading all rookies in scoring while becoming the central figure of the Dallas Mavericks’ new project. His versatility already allows him to influence games in multiple ways, yet the next step will be learning how to control possessions against defenses specifically designed to stop him. Improved efficiency in the half court and greater consistency as a primary creator could move him toward All-Star territory before he even turns 21.

Knueppel may enter Year 2 with the greatest offensive freedom of the three. The Charlotte Hornets guard averaged 18.5 points and set an NBA rookie record with 273 three-pointers, shooting 42.5% from beyond the arc. His combination of movement shooting, decision-making and efficiency gives Charlotte a natural offensive partner for Brandon Miller. The challenge now is to prove that he can punish defenses when they take away his catch-and-shoot opportunities and ask him to create more frequently with the ball.

Edgecombe faces a different situation in Philadelphia. His averages of 16 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists and a rookie-leading 1.4 steals highlighted his all-around impact. However, on a roster filled with established stars, touches will not always be available. His growth may therefore be measured through defensive assignments, transition play, smarter decisions and his ability to contribute without dominating possession. That could make his statistical leap less obvious, but his development no less important.

Flagg has the clearest path to superstardom, Knueppel the largest immediate offensive opportunity and Edgecombe perhaps the best environment in which to become a complete playoff player. They have already demonstrated that they belong. Their second season will reveal how high they can climb and whether the 2025 class can eventually stand alongside the NBA’s most influential generations.
